Fox and Fox to Renovate Chicago Housing Authority ApartmentsInnovative design concepts developed by Fox and Fox Architects for a Chicago Housing Authority project have resulted in bids that came in nearly 25% below budget. The project consists of the gutting and renovation of 62 residential apartments in Washington Park and was originally projected to cost $10,800,000. The final bids came in at $8,400,000. “Certainly it’s a competitive market today, but our unique and high tech computer assisted approach to solving construction challenges is a significant contributor to cost savings,” explains Jay Fox, the firm’s president. Renovation includes the remodeling of three and four-bedroom units, including new kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, heating systems and air conditioning, plumbing, roof, windows and insulated walls. Five percent of the units were made handicapped accessible, meeting HUD and City of Chicago requirements. The project encompasses five sites, the largest at 40th and Langley contains 44 units and includes a garden-like entrance and boulevards to the new, renovated units with landscaping and winding sidewalks. Drawing on its extensive experience in the design of energy efficient technology and construction techniques, Fox and Fox renovations will meet or exceed City of Chicago Energy Guidelines. With more than 90 years of experience, Fox and Fox Architects is one of the Chicago area’s most respected and honored architectural firms. Founded in 1919, the company has made many incredible contributions to the architectural diversity of this city including churches, schools, country clubs, municipal buildings—even the Papal platform for a visit by Pope John Paul II in Grant Park! |
